This is my first blog post. Well, actually, it is not. I have kept a few private "blogs" that either my friends were able to see or that I kept to myself. Honestly, since I don't read blogs, I never really saw a point to them. Maybe it is my age? I'm old old enough to remember when the concept of blogs was invented! I remember the nascent history of the world wide web and the crude way that all of that came together. I remember the fascination of being able to read the thoughts and ideas of people on the other side of the world. Yet, the blog bug never bite me. I did write updates for a while, but I sent those out by email to a select group of friends and family.
More so, I see blogs as a bit...hmmm...how can I say this nicely. I see blogs as people who really have no knowledge on important events and issues speaking their ignorance. They can publish their inane ideas without anyone checking their facts. Is that too harsh? As a writing teacher at a university in Seoul, I tell my students to never use a blog as a source in their academic and/or professional writing. Blogs are where anyone can pontificate on anything that really they have no expertise in spreading their ideas. Is that too critical? Definitely repetitive. :) So, for that reason, I have kept any journaling to myself. The only reason I am starting this blog now is that (1) it might improve my writing. I often tell my students that keeping a journal will help them in practicing their writing skills. (2) it might in some way help create a platform for my writing. Possibly, this will be a connection with my readers...if I am blessed to have those.
If nothing else, this might just be a fun way of keeping me on task of writing the novels, short stories, and poems that I have swirling in my head.
So, what will I write about in these blogs? I might just retell events happening in my life. I don't think I will give my uneducated opinion on issues that I really don't know anything about. I'll keep it safe...which might make these boring. Though, if you are reading these, obviously, you found something interesting in them enough to keep reading to this period.
